microbiology study techniques

Hi all,

Been watching the boards for a while, but not posted. Was wondering if anyone had any tips on studying for microbiology. I'm at Purdue, and our micro class is, for all practical purposes, lethal. Any and all feedback is welcome....

(praying for spring break....wait, I'm gonna be working the whole week....)

What made micro easier for me was to create a grid.

Having labs written down, digital pics of the cultures, type of media used, pics of positive and negative results: ie;gram neg, gram pos. etc and pics of all the slides seen in class made my life easier when the midterm and final rolled around. Its a lot easier to flip thru a couple pages of personal notes than lugging a huge book around to study.

It all depends on the instructor. Mine hardly referred to the textbook at all. Maybe 20 percent of the exams covered text, often less than that.

So I taped and transcribed all the lectures. Even lab stuff. It was time consuming and a real pain, but it made a huge difference in my grade. You really learn the material when you transcribe taped lectures.

Or, at least, that's what worked for me. A lot of people would ask me, how did you know that? And I'd tell them it was from the tapes. It was easy to miss details that showed up on test questions, if you just took notes.
