I have been accepted to Merritt College ADN for fall 2012. Any others that have been accepted as well?

These are the chapters we covered and were tested on. I cannot speak for your class personally because changes are always possible. If you take the summer course your primary reading will be from this same book so they should not interfere with eachother. Also this work load is typical of the entire program. The reading list I gave you is largely from tge first 9 weeks and you should expect similar amounts of reading in each 10 week semester throughout the program.

we used the 7th edition and the book that you guys have is the 8th edition make sure the chapters line up.

good point heartdrop! i checked the 7th edition and some of the chapters were different from 8th edition starting from chapters 27 until 38(some were just switched around). i guess its best not to read too far ahead

So this was from our reading list/schedule. I dont have the exact titles of the chapters because I no longer have the Fundamentals book, however this will most likely be what you will cover as well.

Is this the list for the first 2 weeks? If so, should

I get the med-surg book now also?

No these are the lecture topics for first semester. I would wait on med surg book until after you take first 3 exams. Diabetes was covered in the last week

the 18 chapters covered for our first test were:

-the client & healthcare envronment

-critical thinking in nursing

-activity/rest&sleep/hygiene

-urinary & bowel elimination

-skin integrity/wound care/infection control & prevention

-the nursing process

but as mentioned before there is a possibility that this could be changed up. we didn't get our schedule of topics until about two weeks before class started and our reading list was distributed on the first day of class. so hopefully this is giving you a point of reference of what you'll be assigned but not necessarily in that order, and better yet get over the shock of an 18 chapter first test in the first two weeks of school.

is anyone else having problems with getting admitted to the college. i applied online at ccapply website last week and got the confirmation number, and when i tried to activate my account it said my information did not exist. i emailed them about it last week and still no reply :(

With all due respect, I ask you the following question: Is your staw man oriented response reflective of a personal reaction to my post, or are you simply not understanding what I wrote in my original message?

Who said anything about nursing school being easy? Certainly not me.

Who said anything about hand holding? Certainly not me.

I have 3 people in my family that are nurses. I remember when they were in nursing school, and what they had to endure. Moreover, did you deliberately ignore the part of my post in which I wrote, "Nursing school is going to be a major challenge...?"

Disagreeing with me on the merits/demerits of Merritt College would be one thing, but misrepresenting my position and attacking said misrepresented position (hence, your straw man fallacy) is quite another. So, I put it to you, why have you chosen to respond in this manner?

I clearly have a better command of the English language than you (e.g., you evidently do not know the difference between "your" and "you're" nor the difference between "to" and "too"). I also have a BA from Cal. Anyone who has graduated from Cal will tell you that doing so requires some hard work and critical thinking ability. Does this make me a better person or a better student than you? Certainly not. Nonetheless, you seem to insinuate that I would rather attend a third rate nursing school that will tell me exactly what to do in order to get through their program, which will likely result in my inability to pass the NCLEX.

As I stated in my original post, I chose not to attend Merritt because the program has a bad reputation, the department seems to be run by people that exhibit irresponsible behavior, and the overall campus/college experience at Merritt seems to leave a great amount to be desired. The fact that nursing school is difficult and requires a massive amount of studying, determination and tenacity goes without saying.

As for the aesthetics of the campus, this is a minor point, yet one that underscores an overall pattern at Merritt. It has nothing to do with the program itself. However, when dealing with something as taxing as nursing school, a pleasant campus can provide a tranquilizing effect in the midst of an otherwise stressful experience. Conversely, an incompetent staff, the inability to put forth accurate information, and ugly surroundings can have an exacerbating effect.

Finally, having to deal with an inordinate amount of s**t does not make one a better student or a better nurse. It might very well be the case that a better organized program with competent, literate, and more helpful faculty and staff will amount to not only a better nursing school experience, but also make one a better nurse in the long run. Think about it - when you have to spend less time dealing with incompetence and BS...

example:

I'm still trying to figure out the office hours to turn in my letter :confused: I called, and called, and nobody ever answered.

...you have more time to focus on your studies, and a clearer mind to process pertinent information.

Eccentricity, While it has been lovely having my typos corrected I am choosing not to waste any more time on this meaningless debate. You have made your choice to hold out for an easier experience. I can respect as many who try will not succeed. Good luck in your future endeavors. This will be the last time I respond to you.
