Memorial Hermann vs. Houston Methodist

Published

Hi,

Thinking about a potential move to the Houston area and I've been doing research on these two hospital systems. I have 11 year experience in telemetry, endoscopy, and ambulatory surgery. I've heard that Houston Methodist is the best for nurses (pay, ratios, support, Magnet status etc) and would just like more insight in to the two. Is there another hospital that i should also be looking at? Any general info is greatly appreciated!!

I love both hospital systems. It really depends on what you need from your work. I work at Methodist Willowbrook and it's a beautiful facility with great people. It offers a lot for new nursing students (I did clinicals there as well) and as a PCA it gave me an amazing place to begin learning. I accepted a job at Memorial Hermann as a new nurse because it's a terrific teaching hospital and they have a ton of learning opportunities as their volume and population is very different.

Hey! In what way is their volume & population very different?

Well MH is public and very large. They see more variety in cases than the average hospital because of the specialties they treat, like the burn unit and level 1 trauma center. Methodist is private so they have more resources for their nurses, like better ratios and the equipment at my Methodist location is newer. It depends on which location you go to obviously as downtown hospitals are older

Hello! I've worked for both. I'm assuming you are referring to the TMC location of these hospitals. If so if you are looking for the experience and going back to school go with MH (level 1 trauma) If you are looking for long term go with Methodist. The young ones often go from MH to Methodist in the long run.

These hospitals systems have multiple locations around the Houston area which is great, you can always transfer location within the same hospital system later.

Thank you for all the responses. Memorial Hermann is having a recruiting event near me in a few weeks so I'll check them out.
