MedSurg Certification

Hey All!

Two questions for you:

1) What is the best place/accreditor for a medsurg certification?

2) My two year mark for experience is in October. I had been in a medsurg setting unil a month ago when I was transferred to the APU/PACU of my facility. Will this still be okay for me to pursue my certification?

Many thanks in advance!

Sarah

I don't know which is the best, but I took the ANCC med surg certification exam in march. It was pretty much like taking your RN boards again! I do remember that the instructor at the study classes recommended the ANCC, and that's why I chose it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I took a study course that was designed for either test. They encouraged us to take the AMSN. You can check out both websites and compare the differences Amsn has a chart to use and will tell you if you would qualify. Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN)

If you plan to take the M/S certification, take it soon because there is a hour of practice requirement. I hold an ANCC certification as a Nurse Executive and AMSN as CMSRN. Certification is certification, in my opinion. Good Luck and I do agree with the previous poster, it is like taking your boards again!!!

What do you mean by an hour of practice requirement?

How many hours you have worked. For ANCC you had to have a minimum 2000 of practice hours before taking the exam.

Oh that is what you mean. That is the same for AMSN as well.

Where can I find out when and where the test for CMSRN will be? I don't want the ANA one, but I know there is another. I don't want to broadcast I am taking it at work as I'd feel awful if I don't pass!

You have to sign up for the test before they let you know the where and when. I live in a suburb between Tacoma and Seattle and I had a multitude of times and places to take it. It is offered on a weekly bases at some test centers and even two times a day. You choose the site, day, time.

ETA: most of us did not broadcast it either. I actually signed up to take it and forgot about a meeting at work I was supposed to attend, lol. My manager had left a dozen voicemails on my phone looking for me. Of course my phone was in the car so I did not answer, lol. I never even told him until it was over.
