Medical Assistant should I go to school to be a EKG Tech?

Published

I was a certified MA working in OBGYN for 5 years. I have not been able to find a job in San Diego, partly because I cannot apply to most clinics and job postings here do the requirement of having to be Bi-lingual Spanish/English.

I have thought about going to school to be a EKG Tech. What are the pros and cons of this job? I have yet to be told how much money they make. Not even the school I called would give me a figure!

Can anyone give me an idea? Also EKG's look so hard!

If I'm not mistaken, here in Salem Ore. EKG techs make 12-16/hr; CMAs 12-18 depending on where you work. EKG tech would be a super easy and very boring job with less job security (since so many people can do that job... CNA, RN, Resp therapist... in a budget crunch those type of jobs are the first to get booted).

It seems like CMAs are in high demand in this area, it's surprises me that it's so much different there

Thanks so much for your reply, it gives me a lot to think about. I think I'm going to call the local hospital recruiter and ask a few more questions before I get in to something that is not going to pan out.
