Med surg or straight to Peds?

Published

 I'm a new May 2010 graduate who hasn't taken boards yet. Peds is my interest! I have two offers on a 12 bed peds floor (which cross trains to L&D and Nursery). And and offer to a LTAC facility (pay is way better). I know some say get med surg experience but i'm afraid that if I take the job at the extended care facility, I will miss out on having that peds opportunity. And alot of peds positions want you to have some peds experience. I'm so very confused. Help please!!

If peds is your interest, and you believe this to be a good unit with adequate support for a new grad, then take it.

Long gone are the days when med/surg can or should serve as a training ground for specialties. Med surg IS a specialty, whose patients deserve nurses who are passionate and interested in their care.

I have had a succesful career in NICU, LDRP and school nursing without having worked a minute of med surg.

Best of luck to you.

I agree! If you are going to have a good orientation, then go for the peds!

Go straight to Peds. I never did med/surg and haven't regretted it all! Bonus for you to cross train to L&D, so should you ever want to do adults, you get the best of peds & adult, IMO.
