Med/Surg or Not to Med/Surg. That is the question?

Published

Hi everyone, im a nursing student who will be finishing school next semester and im not sure where i want to start. I currently work on Labor and Delivery as a clerk and i enjoy the unit and would love to work there as a nurse but i get alot of mixed reviews about where a new nurse should start. Should i go to med/surg first then branch out to different units or go where i want to go (L&D)?

i see what you are saying but i feel that if med/surg is not where i would like to be, then why start there and end up transfering out to another unit (like L&D). I feel that it will give me great experience but most of which i will probably not take with me to L&D (ex- NG tubes, Trach care, etc..)

Personally I really want to begin on the Med/Surg floor. I feel like I need the experience plus I'm not exactly sure what I'd like to do just yet.

I am going where I want to go. So should you. It is not point in being unhappy in an area that you don't want to be in.
