med surg to ED

Published

Im thinking of taking a job at a level 2 trauma center as a ED nurse, they have a good training program and I have some decent med surg experience (mostly cardiac/renal/bariatric/GYN experience). my question is would this be better experience for someone planning on going to FNP school in 2 years or should I consider just staying med surg?

I think ED would be better experience- while you do see the trauma and critical patients, you also see all those people with fairly benign complaints that wont get them admitted. You have that solid base of med/surg, seems that seeing a broader range prior to school would make you a stronger practitioner in the long run.

thank you so much for your input. I was thinking the same thing. seems I could do ER and im sure they would let me do fast track (urgent care) sometimes. the hospital recommended I start studying for the CEN so I can take it around the time I start this new job when my contract is up end of January or beginning of February
