Med-surg but cardiac????

Hello!

A couple of hospitals I've worked for have gone from cardiac step down to cardiac medicine which usually boils down to med sure with some basic level of cardiac patients (CHF exac, Fluid volume overload, etc). Why are facilities changing units to this and limiting or eliminating cardiac step down units? Does this save in facility budgets? 

I've never enjoyed med-surg simply because the units tend to take individuals that the unit isn't able to provide care for such as psych without SI patients that want to walk off the unit every 15mins.
