MCI Rn program/Deaconess Rn program

Hi, I recently applied to MCI RN program in Feb. for the Sept. 06. I suggest that you go up to the school which is off Newton Rd. and talk with an admission counselor. I paid my deposit and still don't know if I am in or not. Probably won't know until july or aug according to them. I'm mad that I gave them 100 bucks of my money for them to take so long to decide. The program will graduate it first class in may and then if they pass their n-clex then they can go for accrediation(they don't have it yet). The program cost a little more than 27,000 and is 15 months. I decided to go to Sentara instead b/c they seem more together and doesn't take a zillion years to let someone know if they are in or not. I feel sorry for people who turns down the other programs to get into MCI and then find out that they aren't accepted.(My friend might be one of them, turned down sentara b/c she is still hoping)

I dont know what to do, getting all the prerequisites done then applying to get into the nursing program only to be told there is a waiting list just is nerve racking. I have not done any of the science courses so it will be over a year for me if I dont do the medical career institute. what pre-reqs are required for Sentara, and how long is the waiting list? for there to be a shortage it sure is hard to get into any of the nursing programs in Va. I live in Richmond but I am so desperate that I am willling to travel to norfolk/newport news. When do you start the Sentara program?

For MCI, the only prereqs is high school algebra, chemisty and computer. You have to have like a B in them. I start Sentara in Aug. and there is no waiting list. I got my acceptance letter 2 weeks after I took my entrance exam. There might be now since they pretty much already started to accept. The prereqs are English, A&P, statistics, soc, psych, microbiology, etc. If you go to www.sentara.com and click on hospital and facilities, then schools, the sentara school of health professions, you can find pretty much all you need to know. I am currently at ODU and decided to switch b/c G.P.A isn't high enough and I need a career now since I have a son that I need to take care of. You can supply at sentara once you have 10 credits I think. You can try MCI, www.medical.edu it's just not for me. I can't afford it and I need to go to a program with stability and a good reputation. I have heard mixed reviews about it. There are several posts up here on that debate. May I ask how old are u and if u are in school b/c if you are fresh out of high school I don't see nothing wrong with doing your prereqs at a college. anyways good luck

You seem so nice, and it is obvious you have done your homework. We are kind of in similar situations. I was attending a local community college and I was in the lpn program while trying to hold down my full time job, on top of all that I have 3 children and a husband, so needless to say my plate is full!! Something had to give so as a result my gpa dropped considerably, in fact I would be afraid to transfer my transcript to any of the nursing programs out of fear that they will think I am a dummy when nothing can be further from the truth. Realizing now that nursing school requires too much study time to consider working a full time job, I have my husband's support to go to school full-time. I had to take over a few nursing classes due to missed clinicals and just not being prepared. I have not taken a&p, chemistry, or algebra. So it would take me a while to get those out of the way and I cant afford to be out of work that long, because like you I have little ones I need to feed at home and I want to get this over with and move on. I hope you do well and I wish you all the luck in having R.N behind your name. By the way is the only Sentara School of Health Care in Chesapeake? if so that is too far for me I guess. Do you know anyting about riverside hospital school of nursing?

Sorry, I don't know too much about them (i live in norfolk) but I'm pretty sure that you can do a search for them.(i did it once but don't remember) Sentara school of health professions is only in chesapeake but i don't think it's that far from the peninsula. But there are sentara hospitals all over hampton roads and even williamsburg. So basically those are the only hospitals you can work in so they already know the format. I haven't heard anything negative about the school and they have a good reputation. There is a MCI in Newport News. Like I said before, since you don't have prereqs you should try MCI. Did you go to the website? Did you take chemistry, algebra, and computers in high school? If not they have them on campus. MCI teaches you prereqs and nursing stuff in 15 months which makes it amazing that it is so short. I think sentara is longer b/c it has more clinical time(that's what I heard). I hope this helps! Oh yeah my G.P.A is not that hot either. I went to college only weeks after giving birth to a baby boy. Thank God that he came early b/c my due date was close to the start date. I had A&P 8am and usually didn't get much sleep after the 3am feeding. My son isn't in daycare so I depended on family so whenever I won't in school or work he was with me which leaves with little time to study. I passed all my classes with A's and B's with C's in the sciences and sentara still accepted me. I guess my load isn't as heavy as yours b/c I live with my parents and only have to pay for me and my son needs as well as a car note and a couple of hundred bucks to my dad when I have to show that I appreciate him. You on the other hand has a husband and 3 precious babies to take care of along with bills and morgage. When times get rough, I tell myself that I am struggling today to give myself a better tomorrow.

Hi everyone... I currently go to Sentara, and would be more than willing to give you the down low, and answer any questions u may have... I also live in hampton.. but the commute isnt that bad, but u can find someone to car pool with.. I am a 2nd semester rn student who started in jan.. so if you have any questions i can answer them about my experience thus far in the program..
