I was wondering if anyone has heard about this? I was speaking to a site supervisor at one of our mental health residential treatment centers and she said that Mayview is to be shut down by 2008. This is the first I have heard of this and I was wondering if anyone has heard this.

I haven't heard this. It would be a shame -- I believe there are only 3 state psych hospitals remaining in the state, and the other 2 are much further east.
Mayview's population is 1/10 of what it was years ago, but having done psych clinicals there, I feel strongly that it is needed.
This would be another example of short-sighted political thinking -- save money on one budget item (the expense of the facility) but spend potentially much more "cleaning up the mess" trying to integrate the SPMI population into outpatient settings.
I agree MLOS. Some of the patients that are at Mayview aren't well enough to be moved into the community. They need that structure found in a state hospital. In most community living arrangements (CLAs) 24/7 nursing care in unheard of. Also there are no Behavioral Specialists in most CLAs. Staff are not trained to give psychiatric help and the therapist / psychologists only come in once a week. Plus alot of patients have been a Mayview for a very long time and have come to consider Mayview as home. Being ripped away from home can cause an increase in behaviors. If Mayview is closing - it was not a very well thought out plan.
