Math student looking to transfer to school with nursing program

Published

Hi! I'm currently studying mathematics at a small college. I've been grappling with the decision since this summer and I decided it would be best for me to become a nurse.

When I started college I didn't even consider nursing as a career. I've pretty much been pushed into the whole academia-type thing my whole life, but I realized I would hate that type of job and that nursing fits everything I want in a career.

I just finished up the fall of my sophomore year, and I will need to transfer since we don't have nursing. In my first year, I had a 3.9 GPA, but this semester I had 2 As and 2 Fs… one of the Fs I totally deserved, I'll save you the sob story, but the other one was a beurocratic error thing. Long story short, I got an A in what is basically the same class, but didn't drop it until too late. Anyways, now my GPA is unfortunately at 3.5. I also do very well on standardized tests, I had 99th percentile on the SAT, so hopefully my TEAS will be high.

I need to transfer, but I don't know where to. Right now, I'm thinking University of Massachusetts Boston because the program seems good, but I don't know if I will be able to get into the nursing program and I don't know what I'd do if I didn't get in.

How competitive is UMass Boston's nursing program? What can I do to prep?

It is competitive, so widen your net to UMass Lowell and Dartmouth, Northeastern (looks longer, but the coops are great learning and networking chances that other students don't get), and the other many good schools around. Fallback position could be CCs that have an integration agreement with a university to guarantee you entry into the BSN program after you complete your ASN and pass NCLEX. Get details.
