Math Jitters

Published

I have applied to an ADN program. I struggled through Pre-Algebra about 6 years ago at a different college. Unfortanuatly my MATH did not transfer to my new college now I have to take the placement test to see where I need help. I stink at math. Pre-algebra has so many rules & I just know Im going to be placed in a basic Math class & have to work my way up again. YUCK! I just dont like it & dont get it! I can memorize rules all day long- But once test time comes I will forget.

Anyone here ever take the Compass Placement Test for Math. What was your experience with it.

I need to test out of Mat 050, Mat 060, Mat 070 to stay on track in the Pre-Nursing curriculum. If I dont I am going to fall so far behind. I have my Chemistry Credit (thank goodness)

I have been using a lot of helpful websites to study & refresh

I took it a year ago. I was never that good in math and tested into the pre algebra class. The test did simple math to stuff I had never seen before. We were timed I think I had an hour for it.

I took the COMPASS test about a month ago. Before that I had taken it back in 2000 and was going to have to take the lowest math that my CC offered, something like elementary mathematics. I ended not getting to start college then and since it had been so long ago I had to retake the test before enrolling for the Spring 08 semester. I knew that I wanted to score high enough to be able to take the math that the nursing requires so I started practicing online about 2 weeks before my test date. I was really petrified of doing bad on the test and I scored high enough to take College Algebra.

My test had alot of math word problems, a few fractions, measurements, problems with exponents, that kind of thing. Study up on pre-algebra to algebra, www.math.com helped me tremendously. Math was the first portion on my COMPASS and it was not timed, if it is a computer test it will shut off after you get so many problems wrong. Calculators are allowed and my CC provided them for us.

Dont get stressed about it and best of luck to you!!

math was not my best subject either. as soon as i found out i had to take the compass test i started studying. the day of the test i was calm and thought i would at least pass. wrong!! i failed the math portion and would have to start with basic math. at first i was bummed but once i got started i seemed to understand the information so much better then i did in high school. i got an a in all three dev. math course (my school has a series of three courses to pass). even though it is taking me a little longer to finish up my pre-reqs, really understanding the information was worth it.

best of luck to you.
