Hey everybody,

I am starting with my maternity and pediatric clinicals this semester. I am kind of nervous about what to expect . Can you all help me and give me some tips and strategies to be successful in this semester. Thank you all for your help.

Hi

At my school, maternity and pediatric was taken together few semesters ago but the nursing dept. realized it was too much material to cover in one semester. So now, it is taken separately. I just took maternity this summer and got an "A" in the class. My advice is to really focus on the textbook and study along with you classnotes (powperpoint slides). Practice NCLEX questions and MC questions from the text. Maternity clinical is kind of fun b/c you get to play with newborn babies and watch real lady partsl or c-section birth (VERY COOL!)

As for pediatric, my classmates told me it's even harder b/c we need to know the child development stages (remember Erikson). Just like Med/Surg but in child version, a lot of illnesses, disorder, cancers, etc. I'm taking pediatric and elder next semester.

Good luck!

in helping students do careplans i found this careplan book that i thought was pretty helpful:

maternal/newborn plans of care: guidelines for individualizing care, third edition, by marilynn e. doenges and mary frances moorhouse. it is basically broken down into four major sections: prenatal, intrapartal, maternal postpartal and newborn concepts. each of these sections starts off with the assessment (abnormal) data that you want to be looking for in these patients at those stages. it looks like they use gordon's functional healthcare needs as a basis. within each section they have careplans for most of the major nursing problems encountered at those stages of pregnancy along with nursing diagnoses and interventions. other assessment data is included where necessary. i found it to be a really nice resource.
