Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

ob is no different from med/surg except that the focus is specifically on the reproductive system. like everything medical condition you are learning about you want to follow the nursing process (know what is normal, how the patient situation you are looking at deviates from normal, realize that those deviations are causing certain specific symptoms, treat the symptoms and underlying causes to solve the problem).

  1. learn and know the normal cycle of pregnancy, development of the fetus and what should go on during each stage of labor and delivery. that forms the baseline of normal against which all your ob patient assessments are made.
  2. from there, anything that deviates is abnormal and considered a problem--and, believe me, plenty can and does go wrong. problems translate into nursing diagnoses.
  3. know how these abnormalities are treated
  4. having had children and gone through a childbirth or two doesn't make anyone any kind of expert in this area. studying is what is going to help you learn this material and pass tests.
  5. this military medical corpsman ob training web site has all kinds of info including videos: http://www.brooksidepress.org/products/military_obgyn/home.htm
  6. lots to explore on this website as well: http://wps.prenhall.com/chet_london_maternal_1 - online student companion website for maternal-newborn & child nursing by marcia l. london, patricia a. ladewig, jane w. ball, and ruth l. bindler
  7. for information on specific obstetrical problems, pathophysiology and medical treatment, see the articles listed here on emedicine: http://www.emedicine.com/obgyn/index.shtml

I am currently in OB right now too and my upper classmen recommended a reallly good book called "Maternal Newborn Nursing 2nd Edition Reviews and rationales" by Hogan, Glazebrook, Brancato, and Rodgers. So far it has been a really good book. My 1st test(TOMORROW!!!!!) is on 16 chpts and it has really been a life saver. It simplifies the book we use really well. Plus its got a bunch of NCLEX questions and a CD with a bunch more. GOOD LUCK and remember BUBBLE HE! lol.
