Could anyone help me out with where to find material on running groups in a psychiatric unit? i.e. on anger, coping skills, stress, feelings, communication, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jllpn,

Two books by Irvin D. Yalom--Inpatient Group Psychotherapy and The Theory And Practice Of Group Psychotherapy are books that I have used. There is an excellent text -Psychiatric Nursing 2nd edition- edited by Suzanne Lugo that gives guidelines for

Therapy. There are excellent articles on Reminiscing therapy for geriatrics. Reminiscing: The Life Review Therapy, Journal of Gerontological Nursing by Joan Lapp, 1987, Vol.13, No.4 is an old article and a classic.

Psychodynamic Group Therapy for Older Adults by Wood and Seymour, Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Sevices,1994, Vol.32, No.7 is also a classic.

These articles are hard to find unless you go to a library affiliated with a school of nursing. There are various sites on the internet that you might want to explore. If you would like more info you can e mail me and I can fax you some of the articles.

I am studying for my MS in Psych Nursing and have got tons of info that I am willing to share. Groups are very powerful and more nurses need to be involved in them. The patients love groups- especially self esteem building, cognitive therapy groups. Good luck and let me know how things work out.
