Master's Program Specialties

I'm a student from a non-nursing program looking at schools for a master's in nursing. I just would like some advice for a specialty to choose. I was leaning toward family, but I also have an interest in mental health or women's health. I was wondering what advice people had on choosing a specialty, and if choosing a certain specialty limits the jobs you can get. I will be seeking out employment in the MA/NH area after graduation.

Unlike "regular" nursing school, MSN programs pretty much lock you into a particular role and career path. I encourage you to do a lot of research and get some real healthcare experience before committing to a direct entry MSN program. I've known a few people (and I'm sure the people I've known personally are not the only people in this situation!) who have rushed into a direct entry program only to find, after they had the MSN, and the loans to pay for it, that they didn't like doing what the MSN had prepared them to do. Then they had to figure out what they did want to do, what degree or certification they needed to be able to do that, and how to pay for the additional education. Not a happy place to be ...

Best wishes for your journey!
