Moms and Accelerated Nursing Program

I have always thought of going into nursing because I think I would find it rewarding and the hours flexible enough to spend time with my family. I was just not motivated enough.

I am a mom of 2 young children (2.5 years and 3 months) and I have been out of the workforce for over 2 years now. I want to seriously pursue nursing and since I already have a bachelors in animal science which I earned in 2006, I only have 3 pre-reqs to makeup that have expired. I want to enroll in an accelerated nursing program in the Boston area but want to talk to other moms who have graduated from the program to find out how they balanced school and family as it is full time and I heard very tough.

Any moms out there with advice?

I was thinking about working on the pre-reqs through Portage Learning institute as it is self-paced so if my kids get sick or if I have a rough night with the baby, I am not under a deadline. I was also considering starting an evening CNA program and get a per diem job to get work experience prior to entering a program.

I can't tell you about the specific program in question, but I did graduate from an accelerated program (ADN in 16 months). A large portion of the class (myself included) had kids, and managed just fine. There are lots of people going into nursing as a second career, and that tends to mean lots of people who already have kids.

2/3 of the way done with a post-bac accelerated BSN right now -- I do work (though there were times that I didn't). It is INTENSE and the workload is huge especially if it's a program that front-loads, but it's not impossible. A couple of people in my cohort have young kids and they make it work.

My son was 3 yrs old when I started the program.

He has early memories of me studying and my deal with him that I would play with him and not study, but at bedtime his job was to sleep and mine to study.

He is now 17 and a senior in high school, he admits it was hard to have a mom going through nursing school when he was younger, but he also attributes his work ethic to watching me work so hard.

I feel like we were a team going through this and I have a great picture of him sitting on my shoulders with my graduation cap on his head.
