Malpractice insurance for RNs?

Published

I am trying to decide if I should get my own in addition to what the hospital provides. Some of my friends won't work without it, and others don't care, but I don't really know that much about it. Any suggestions?

I think it's only like $100/yr or something like that... so why not. Extra protection is ALWAYS good.

If you do a search, there is already a lot of good advice and information about on this site. Many nurses here get theirs through NSO which is about $100 a year.

I get your own. Its pretty cheap like the previous poster mentioned.

Look at Professional Liability Insurance for nurses, nursing medical malpractice. or Professional Liability Insurance - Proliability

I'm surprised your employer will provide it. I will not work one day without it in this lawsuit happy society. People will find any reason to sue to make a quick buck.

I would rather have it and NOT need it then to not have it and be sued.. It is so cheap, why not carry it.. Hospitals can throw us under the bus, protect yourself.

Check out NSO's website. And after you purchase yours, make sure you don't let your employer and patients know that you have it!

I have had it since I was a LPN. I want my own protection and don't want to have to rely on my facility to protect me. There are some that believe that having it makes you more likely to be sued, that is why the poster above stated not telling anyone you have it. For me the protection far outweighs the risk.

Simple answer...YES. Get it.

I've had insurance through NSO since I was in nursing school. It's money well spent...just in case.

Any insurance that your hospital provides is aimed a protecting the hospital, NOT you.

As a matter of fact I just got mine yesterday. Had been with NSO before then moved back to TX where the premiums are 250 instead of the 100 in most places. The more I thought about the more I figured I just needed to bite the bullet and sign back up....... The piece of mind is so worth it, plus working in the OR on the Heart Team means we see really sick folks.

Many people will say you are more apt to get sued if you have your own insurance, but do you REALLY think your hospital won't throw you under the bus if need be???

If you own nothing and have nothing to lose you don't need insurance. If you have a home, car, savings, personal possessions, then you need insurance. If I have a problem then I want a lawyer who is going to represent MY best interests, not the hospital's which is exactly what the hospital's lawyer will do - even if it means frying you!

Maybe we want to merge this thread with the other one Siri linked to about since that one is a pretty big thread with a lot of info. on it already?
