Count me in too, I recently earned a Associates degree from the local community college where I earned my pre-req credits. I was recently accepted to the nursing program at Alvernia University. Man what a rush, I'ts gonna be great going to a 4 year school and finishing up my BSN. Been an EMT for almost 6 years and this is something I now wish I had done from the start. The only thing that seems to get me down right about now is the bill for the school. thank god for financial aid!

I'm a 32 year old male about to be married (October) and am in the process of applying for nursing school. Took my HESI A2 on Tuesday and scored about 95%... going for my interview next Wednesday. I'm really excited, but also really scared as well... it's good to know I'm not the only one.

Specializes in N/A. I'm a nursing student..

Hello guys, I will be starting a LPN program in a few months. Personally, I'm really not bothered about entering a program/field which is dominated by females. On the contrary, I think being a male nurse, at least in some specialty areas, can be a plus. However, what does bother me is that I have to go through a CNA course before I start the core LPN program. RN students get to bypass this detail.

It's not so much my gender as much as it's my age, I'm 45, that makes me feel a little awkward. This is especially the case because of the CNA detail. You see, I wanted to go straight into a ADN program, but the wait lists were too long. I'm going the CNA/LPN route. However, I will fast track into the RN program after I complete my LPN.

Bottom line here is that a guy going into nursing is pretty much a nonissue, however, being 45 and male in a class full of 20 something female, and doing the CNA is going to be "different" I suppose. And oh yes, a few of my friends are already calling me a "boy" nurse. LOL.:nurse:

As far as the fast track comment. You may find that while some schools offer "advance standing"

for LPNs usually it is only for one semester out of a 4-8 semester brogram (ADN/BSN). I would still expect to have to do 75% to 90% of the original program. LPNs and RNs function a little differently in terms of scope of practice and the amount of responsibility that will be expected. This is primarily due to the additional educational prep given to the professional nursing student.

I suppose one plus is that while going back for RN you can at least work a few hours making decent money as an LPN. I am not really sure if it is true but I have heard from several RNs and LPNs that general med/surg LPNs do almost the same job and carry similar patient ratios for half the money with the main difference being the LPNs inability (due to scope of practice) to do IV push meds and a few other "select" procedures.

Can anyone verify if this is accurate at your facility?

Hi guy's Im a 31yro male with 3 kids and divorced. I spent 12 year on active duty in the US Army. I have Spent the last 2 years chasing the wrong dream. I wanted to be a Cop. But the process takes to long and right when you think you have it they drop you for some reason. I wish I would have decided on the Nursing route 2 years ago. I would be done with my RN now and not just starting my LPN.

I wanted to add that the fact that I am 1 of 4 males in my class, does not bother me so much. Im not there to worrie about stuff like that I just want my training so I can find a job and take care of my family.

Good Luck everyone.
