Male Doctors working with Male Nurses

Published

I was watching Hopkins last night(pretty good show), which shoes all the doctors and nurses doing what they can for the patients. Most of the doctors they show are male, and I was wondering, what the environment is like with male doctors and male nurses. Do the doctors ever look down on you for being a male nurse? I only ask as some of the doctors were a little arrogant and question what the nursing staff goes through. Thanks.

I have never felt like I was looked down on as a male RN. If anything, I find it easier than my female colleagues to interact and work with my male physician coworkers. There shouldn't be a disparity, but unfortunately, it still exists.

I find that I am treated better and my ideas and concerns are typically addressed. I have noticed that my female colleagues are often talked down to and their concerns fall upon deaf ears.

I have found that doctors respect me more being male...females are often spoken down to and the doctors blow off their suggestions. I have been asked to call doctors that the female nurses have trouble with and are "afraid" to call and have never had a problem.

I generally find that I get along with all doctors, even the ones the other nurses don't. Can't say whether this is dt being male or not.

Although, I will say that female nurses seem to have problems with the Middle Eastern doctors, while male nurses become buddy buddy with them. Thats cultural though, really.

I'm looked down on and treated like dirt under thier feet by a few of the doctors in an equal amount as my female peers. Being male or female dosen't seem to have much of an impact one way or another on the doctors who choose to treat nurses with contempt.
