MA or RN

Nurses General Nursing

Published

So... this is a no brainer I know, nurses get paid more and they have more education. Okay cool. But I have an issue because I'm already stuck in a medical assistant program I started last year. I will get an associates in applied science, and a CMA, but I feel like its not what I really want. I really want my BSN and I feel like I'm cheating myself. I just wanna know what would you do if you were in my shoes?

1. Drop out of the MA program and join a BSN program asap

2. Finish my AAS and get my CMA then go to nursing while working in the hospital

3. Finish the MA program and work as an MA (35-40k salary NYC)

My circumstances

  • Single mom 27 (sons 9 so in school also)
  • Grew up in NYCHA, Now in Sec 8 (can you believe you cant be a full time student on section 8, its like saying HERE! I'll pay your rent for life if you stay poor! Disgusting so I'm kinda sneaking to go to school now)
  • Working in part time in a hair salon (I'm a licensed cosmetologist) went to beauty school after highschool..

Being in the beauty industry has taught me I really care about people, some clients would vent to me about their health problems and I wish I could help them more, and many of my clients told me I would make a wonderful nurse or doctor. I'm not going to school for 50 years to be a doctor thats totally out of the question lol. But I feel like I could really support me and my son being a nurse. The hours are flexible just like the salon, I can work long weekends and work while my son is in school. Also with a beauty background, I felt it would be amazing if I could go into the dermatology/plastics/aesthetics/oncology field because I'm really good with helping people exteriorly. (And also helping interiorly) I also thought this would be a great oppurtunity to be able to make wigs for cancer patients as well as being able to help out with skin services with burn patients, and skin pathology which I have experience in being a cosmetologist. I just feel like medical assistants scope of practice is dull. It's basically doctors little helper aka slave, a bunch of paperwork, EHRs, meaningful use, and I want to do so much more...I dont know what to do lolz. Please help! Here's a list of schools I looked at:

LIU

St Phillips

CSI

Monroe

Fordham

New Rochelle

Classes in the MA program are like

A&P 1,2

Pharmacology and Pathology

Medical Terminology

Law and Ethics

Medical Administration

Develpmental psychology

2 clinicals

phlebotomy

Osha

writing, math, and research classes I have took all. I would be finished August 2019.

I can get a job in a med spa already they would hire me as an medical assistant because of my cosmetology license my title would be esthetition. But I can literally get that job now with no MA certificate. It's so confusing. Well thanks for reading my book if you did lolz I'm just so lost
