Lpn-rn?

what is the difference between going straight to an RN or becoming LPN first? or any other things of that nature?

More experience on the floor I think. In LPN school youre in the hospital from day one. I am currently in LPN school at the moment. But from what I hear from the higher ups, is that RNs get alot less time then us on the floor. My program has us in the hospital twice a week from 7am-4pm. I might be wrong but either way, just do what you feel is right for you :) First term (I clept because I am an EMT) the students in my program did basic care at a LTC facility. But 2nd term, which I just completed was full on med/surg and assessment and starting to give meds. Now its 3rd term starting monday.. We are doing total health care, including all the meds o_O.

I hear in the BSN programs you dont even get to go to clinical till 3rd year. Being that I have my AS in nursing and soon to be my LPN, when I apply to my RN/BSN ill have just clinicals and already a year under my belt. Just food for thought.

I did LPN school first, then work and just finished RN school (now am a GN). I think I have the advantage of having more experience on the floor and pass the first year nursing sooner then a straight RN from a college. At least, it didn't take me long to figure out all the downside of nursing (1 yr LPN school, then got burnt on the floor right away). Now that I have passed the first year in nursing, the worse seems to be over. If you go straight to ASN, typically you will be spending 1 year to 1.5 years for pre-reqs, then on a waiting list to nursing school. You are still on the "dreaming stage". Then ASN school start and you'll graduate in 2 years and work on the floor only to find out you now start to get really burnt. So, after about 3.4 to 4 years in school, you start on the floor and ask yourself: "So, this crap is nursing!?"

Well, I may be a little off topic but I spoke from my experience. If you do LPN school first, at least you can get a "nurse" job while you are in ASN school and earn some money and get your feet wet. They usually will hire you after you finished ADN because they already know you. They may also give you a schoolarship (with 100 pages of fine print attached) while you in ADN school if you are already a LPN with them.

Not much help here.
