:nurse:I live near the ohio/indiana line. I will graduate as a LPN in Indiana July, take board Aug, etc. I am going to pay the extra money to be licensed in both states. My question is how is the pay, benefits, etc. I am hearing that Ohio is better pay and benefits, so this is why i am doing this. I am willing to travel to dayton, the most is probably 40 miles. I also have always dreamed of working at the VA, my family is active so I was raised around it. I have been there and I thought it was nice but not sure about the working environment. Greenville Hospital is not too far, however I have not heard much about it? Anything near these areas?? I would appreicate any input. At the point, I am interested in working in a med-surg area however, any job is a job! Thanks

I live in Ohio, but used to work as an LPN in Indiana about 10 years ago. I had no trouble getting duly licensed, however, my initial licensure was in Ohio. From what I understand, Ohio is more stringent on licensure requirements than many states, so it may behoove you to check on this and perhaps consider becoming licensed first in Ohio, if you really want to work there. Pay and benefits are going to vary per area and facility of course. I believe that Miami Valley and Good Sam do hire LPNs. Kettering Network hires mainly RNs, but you might be able to find a job there. Do you have any hospital experience as a nursing assistant? Also, there are many nursing homes and long term acute rehab centers in the area and I think that is where you'll probably have the most luck in terms of finding a job quickly with competitive pay. I would not suggest going agency until you have at least one year experience. Just so you know, Wayne hospital in Greenville is very small and the website only posts positions for RNs, so that may not be an option. I had clinicals at the VA and I will be honest in saying that I didn't like it, but I know that if you can put up with a lot of BS, the benefits are phenomenal. Good luck!

I am from ohio...Greenville Hospital does not hire lpns.....And also...as far as I have heard...Miami valley doesnt either unless you are going to go for your rn....I hear they will pay for schooling also....The only hospital that I know that hires lpns is Reid hospital in richmond....a girl in my lpn class just got hired there...shes getting I think 19.00 hr. I am taking my state boards in dayton on Friday. :icon_roll
thanks for your input, I am just trying to get an idea were to expect to work. I have only had nursing home experence. Have loved it very much. I have had clinicals at hospitals though. I do not mind a nursing home, I know pay is more there. But after being in a hospital, I like the med surg unit. I figure I will experience a lot there while i wait my year to go back as a RN. I know that Reid starts their LPN's at 15+change and RN out at 20=change. What school did she go to, because that is a lot. A girl I know is a RN (2 yr experience there only)and only makes $20. So right on for your friend. She must of knew what she was doing. Good luck with your boards. truely mean that. Just relax and review with a nice cup of coffee. Get ready for the snow....
does any one know about brothern nursing home? I have heard a lot of good stuff about it from a family that had their grandparents there.

Congrats on graduating, yea i know of MVCTC I had applied to go there, got accepted and actually two other schools, choose the one nearby. but, i really liked MVCTC. Yea, I have never been to Betherns but I heard it was really nice, never heard what they pay. Have you decided where you want to work yet? I have a while till I graduate but it is a big decision to me, b/c i have never been the type to hop jobs, so i want to pick the right atomsphere. I know everyplace is different and etc, i know I need experience everywhere, that is why I was interested in med surg. However I have always worked in LTc so i would not mind that either if it was rehab or in that nature.
