LPN interview for OB unit

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I went for an interview today for a LPN position in a hospital OB unit. Is it true that these position are rare for a LPN. I work at a OB/GYN clinic now Mon-Fri 9-5 this is for 3 12hr shifts 7p-7a what do you think of the change?

I have been working on an OB unit or MotherBaby Unit for the past 3 years and I'm an LPN. Our floor is made up of mostly RNs but they do hire LPNs when there is an opening. I personally love 3 12 hour shifts. It sounds like you are already in the OB world working at a clinic. However working on an OB unit in an hospital you have alot of admissions and discharges, so alot of teaching!! You will have do regular assessments, give meds, help with breastfeeding, draw any labs that are ordered and may more things. Oh and deal with family members. But it is a good job most of the time :) Good luck :)

Thanks for you reply. This is at a military hospital and was told they only do on an average 12 births a month. I have worked on a med surg floor at one time so no problem with the family and all. Do you work nights?

It's a rare position at our hospital. I started out as an LPN in the well baby nursery. We then turned our department into an LDRP where babies stayed with their mothers. When our manager got tired of that, she separated that unit into two making one an L&D unit and the other a postpartum unit. By that time, I got my RN. There are no LPNs working L&D but only one LPN working on nights and one LPN working days on the PostPartum unit. . The rest of her 60 some staff are RNs.
