I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the scope of practice is for LPN's and deep suctioning and nasal suctioning. I have been trying to find out without success. I am pretty sure LPN's cannot do this. I am pretty sure this is out of the scope of practice for LPN's. Does anyone know how I can find this out? Please help. I am desperate. I am scared that my license is on the line.

I learned about deep suctioning and how to perform it in school, however, it IS against our scope of practice. Usually (i guess depending on the hospital) the RT does it and I am sure you would need a MDs order bc it can cause the pt to desat as well as produce mucous.

Depends on the state. It's definitely within my scope with a physician/provider order in my state. You need to check your BoN nurse practice act
Also, I believe you can go to the board of nursing website and review scope up there.. i think they have a downloadable list or whatever :) hope this helps!
