Low 2.34 Undergrad GPA

Published

Hi all,

I've been looking into nursing programs and I'm trying to figure out what might be the best route for me. I graduated from my undergrad in dec 2011 with a 2.34 gpa. Pretty bad, right? I'm wondering which route would be a more viable option for me. I was looking into only 2nd degree programs, but a friend suggested I consider direct entry MSN programs as well. Eiither way, I want to be able to have my BSN first. I currently am taking human development at a local community college where I will be taking the rest of my prereqs as well. This is only the beginning, but I need some help and options. I am willing to go to ANY state in the US. :)

Why is your GPA low?

Did you try hard and not understand the material?

Did you not put much effort into your classes?

Did you not do well in liberal arts classes or science classes?

Nursing school is very difficult and demanding and requires a good foundation in sciences/critical thinking and a ton of effort on top of that.

Direct entry MSN programs are difficult to get into and usually have a minimum GPA. If you think you have the ability to succeed in nursing school I would go through community colleges.

It's hard to give an opinion when you need to redo 1/2 of your science classes and still haven't taken one of them. You can recover from a poor past undergrad GPA if you prove you've got what it takes now, but your Prereq GPA isn't doing that right now.

You need to figure out why you're struggling and work at that. Time management? Lack of understanding? Anxiety? Whatever it is, think long and hard about it, because getting into nursing school isn't the hardest part - STAYING in nursing school is the hardest part if you're struggling.

I'd do some self-reflection and start retaking classes. Start working on adding some "A"s to your Prereq list, then see where you stand.
