Low science GPA - Mt. St. Mary's

Published

I've applied to mount St. Mary's ADN program and was accepted into their pre-ADN program since I need to complete 2 more classes. I have an A in anatomy and 3 C' s in the rest of my science classes and the rest are A's.

In short the academic advisor for My. St. Mary's said I can write a letter stating why my grades were low (had a family issue when I took micro/physio) and she could not give me an idea as to my chances of admittance. Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this and did you get in the program? I'm tempted to take my required religious studies course in hopes of getting into the program but am just unsure of its even worth it. Thanks

Be cautious of "excuses". When you are a nurse you need to provide A level care to your patients no matter what is going on in your life. Every single person in school is facing challenges. You are best to own your miscalculations and learn from them. Lawyers and lawsuits don't care if you someone in your family died or you are having a "family issue".

Learn from this and move on. I am amazed the school is actually asking for a letter. Where I went to school that would be considered favoritism because another person with lower grades may have had more problems than you and still earned same grade. What if another person doesn't get accepted who worked harder than you, but didn't complain about the hard classes? And they get passed over? Wrong on all levels.

This so true and is also why leaves of absences exist at work. I am merely asking for thoughts on if I should even bother trying to move forward there or cut my losses, not the morality of the situation. Looking back at what was going on when I took my physio/micro I should have petitioned for a leave of some sort of leave at school.

Hi !

I am a graduate of Mt. St. Mary's in LA. I hope that is the school you are referring to lol. If so I want to tell you not to lose hope. Just write an amendment and let them know your situation but in the letter don't let it seem as if you are placing blame on a situation for your Cs. Explain to them what happened and how you learned from that situation and skills you will use to cope and get through with a better grade if it ever arises again. I graduated with a BA in a different field but I can assure you that they take a holistic approach in regards to reviewing applicants. It is very competitive but you may have strengths in other areas that will get you into the program.

And the truth is life happens. And admissions teams can understand that.

Don't lose hope and best of luck to you for this program and any other program you are applying to !!
