Low gpa and chance of getting into nursing schools

Nursing Students General Students

hi everyone,

My name is Annie, I am currently holding a BS in chemistry and looking for a Accelerate BSN program that I can enter. My gpa is 2.95 which is quite low compared to others.

My prerequisites are all B+, and C+. I have human phys, anatomy, chemistry, introduction to psy, nutrition, stats...etc all of the requirement except sociology.

I wonder if anyone could give me some names of schools that accept students with gpa like me in states like VA, NC or anywhere. I am in desperate need right now!

If you could help me, I would be very appreciate it,

Thank you

Annie

Hi Annie,

I know all of this can be hard to hear. When I entered college, I wanted to get a BSN. But because of personal issues, my grades dropped and I knew I could not apply to the program (no way of acceptance). So what I did was work my butt off for the rest of college and got my B.S in community health/health education. I pulled the bad gpa to 3.3 before graduating. That with some other credits from another school got me to a 3.5. In that time I learned the skills needed to succeed as a student. I am heading into a BSN program (2 years 4 months for me. not accelerated.) in May.

What I think could be really helpful to you is maybe taking some post bach classes. Retake any pre reqs you didnt do well on. Take new classes if you need to. Work to boost your GPA. This will help your chances.

Lastly, I agree with the others about ABSN. I don't say this to be mean, but that's tough and if you didn't do as well undergrad, its not going to get better in that kind of program. You need to work on study skills, etc. I am doing a regular BSN (though many of my classes transferred) because of that reason.

I hope that maybe this was at least somewhat helpful. Don't give up on a dream, just know that you may have a road ahead of you to get there.

Don't get too discouraged. Your degree was probably more intense then some out there. I think you could do a ABSN for sure. Though you need to make sure you don't have to work and you can give it 100%. Before you do any retakes email or meet with schools you are interested in; some don't like to see retakes!

I was accepted to Villanova's BSNExpress program. It is 14 months long and I start this coming May. They also have an alternative ABSN that is a little longer because you have the summer off. Take a look at them! They have a more holistic approach for their interview and selection process. Also, the alternative option (with summer off) accepts GPAs that are a little lower. Very structured program and great school. I hope you don't get discouraged about your GPA or an ABSN program. You can definitely do it if you are solely dedicated to it!

Thank you so much!

I will ask if I can be in the traditional program in the school i have applied in case the ABSN does not work out.

Can I ask where you got into school at?
