Looking to talk to RNs in Canadian Forces (Regular)

Hello all,

My initial plan upon graduating from nursing school (U of Calgary) was to enter the CF, but when I went to speak with a CF recruiter, he told me that my commitment would be seven years (even though I paid for nursing school myself). Just wondering what the minimum commitment is now, and what my chances are of being posted in my home city (Edmonton), given that I'm married and hubby isn't in a position to come with me. Willing to go overseas, as long as I could come back to Edmonton. Anyone out there who was/is in a similar position?

Thanks!

The CF won't guarantee anyone the posting of their choice regardless of where "home" is. As an RSM told my husband many years ago "if we had wanted you to have a wife, we would have issued you one". In other words, they expect your spouse to move with you.

After three decades of being a military spouse, I can tell you that recruiters and careers managers will often tell you what they want you the member to hear and then do something totally different. My husband has had the luxury of turning down one posting and was told that by doing so he jeopardized his career.

It's true that there are fewer postings today than years ago due to the financial cost of moving a member and their family but ultimately the military's well being is more important than the serviceman's family.

As to be "willing" to go overseas, it's not really your choice it's part of the job. Once you sign on the dotted line you have very little control over a lot of your life.

Hi Fiona59,

Many thanks for the reply ... I figured my question might have come off as sounding rather stupid, as I pretty much knew in my heart what you said :crying2: but thought I'd put out feelers nonetheless.

I think I'll go back to checking out becoming a nursing officer in the CF reserves ... probably the most sensible option. I was in the reserves many years ago (was a private, qualified infantry), so I've got a better idea as to what to expect with that option.

Take care ... :)
