Looking at a move to the Rochester area

Published

I'm a pre-nursing student and we're planning a move to the Rochester area in ~ 4 years. I've got the "move here, you'll love us!" packet from the Chamber of Commerce, maps, real estate ads, etc., but wondered if anyone familiar with the area could share some about good areas to buy a house? My idea of a decent commute could differ drastically from what people there would think. Our ideal would be a house on a couple acres in the country - is something like that reasonable and within commuting distance of the Rochester City hospitals?

Realize I currently live in the outermost Washington, DC suburbs and commute into the city. I qualify for super commuter status, logging 150 miles and on average 3.5 hrs a day. I don't want to get into a similar commute once we move, but my idea of a decent commute has been somewhat skewed in recent years.

Of course we'll be visiting several times before we go, but the planner in me wants to start planning NOW! lol

Thanks bunches for any advice/insight/ideas you can offer! :wink2:

Oh, believe me, I'm more than ready after spending 20 years here! I spent some time in Alaska as a child and miss real winters. lol

Hello! I live in Rochester, Irondequiot to be exact, that is a suburb. I think that if you are used to living in/near DC any commute will be better than what you are used to. Do you have any idea of where in Rochester you will be planning to live? There are several hospitals here. Strong Memorial, the biggest one is in the actual city. Then there is Rochester General which is also in the city, also a large hospital. Then we have Highland, which is part of Strong, much smaller, but also in the city. And Unity Hospital which is in the suburb of Greece. All of the hospitals are close to the interstate highways we have here. If you have any idea of what areas you are looking to live I can give you an idea of how long the commute is. Any of the suburbs are about 20 minutes from the city. Of course in the winter it may be a bit longer. And as someone else said yes we get a lot of snow, but if you lived in Alaska, I think you will be able to handle :)

Look into Bloomfield, Canadaigua, Honeoye Falls, or Dansville areas. Many of our former farmland or grassy bits have been developed within the city and you might need to get out of the city limits to find the acreage you want. You can look in Mendon also, that is a bit closer to the city and near a huge park and the houses there seem to be pretty large and with decent land. Also on the outskirts of Henrietta, such as West Henrietta or Rush, may have the land you want with a lesser commute than the places I mentioned above. My friend works at U of R (Strong Hospital) and drives in from Bloomfield daily. Its about a half hour drive but its almost a straight line. Again, winter adds time but she says its not too bad.
