I will be starting the program (Feb 2008). Is there anyone out there that can tell me what to look forward to or give any advice?

How is/was the program?

Thanks,

What program are you starting? Can't really say much about the classes past the pre-reqs since I am starting my first RN program class in Jan.

I am currently in the RN program at the Newport news site. I think its awesome! Your first few mods will be tough, especially if you have not done any accelerated courses before. The best advice I can give you is to get into a study group ASAP and meet as often as humanly possible. Also, if you are not sure about any material or your grades start to slip, get help right away!! Really, like immediately, because 5 weeks goes by insanely fast, and if you flunk, you get bumped back 3 months till the next round of students comes in. Also, if you have kids, be SURE you have more than one sitter lined up, have someone you trust that you can call at a moments notice, because they are really strict about the absence policy, and a sick child or an unreliable sitter can mess your world up in a very short amount of time.

I don't mean to sound negative at all, my experience at MCI has been awesome! I just got capped in december, and I graduate in September!!! The instructors are great (tough, but fair and extremely knowledgeable). The folks who run the school REALLY want to see you succeed, so if you need help with anything, and I mean anything...just ask. My DON has helped with medical advice, financial advice, and just been a shoulder to cry on when I needed someone to melt down on during a family crisis. I definitely didn't expect all that when I signed on! They really are great!

Good luck to you...any other questions, ask away, and I will try to answer the best I can.:stdnrsrck:

I just started my pre reqs for the RN program in January. Im excited to find out what to expect also.. Hoping to be accepted. What program are you going into?

I would be very , very, VERY careful!! That being said I will tell you that I attempted their registered nursing acclerated program in Newport News back in fall of 2005/winter 2006 with the promise I would be done in 15 months which does NOT include the 3 months of prerequisites so in actuallity a total of 18 months. I was to be done in April of 2007 The school would not allow me to transfer in my A&P, Chemistry, Math from an accredited university so I took it over again. I passed Chemistry, Computer, Math, and A&P 1 with good grades only to not sucessfuly pass A&P II (WHICH I HAD ALREADY TAKEN AND RECEIVED A B+) and received the news I would have to wait 3 months to pick up the program again. I got the run around the whole-time I was there and several of the people that were my contacts including my advisor, financial rep, etc either left the school or retired. My daytime class started with 30 students only 3 graduated from the original program in April 2007. After six months, I threw in the towel and went to a accredited two year institution some of my friends stuck with the program had to repeat at least 2 or 3 times meaning the majority will be graduating at the same time I will in May 08 or this summer 2008. Even though they have stayed it has only been because they can't really afford to go to a accredited school because no university or community college will accept their credits the only reason I had no problems is because I had been to college previously. So, lesson learned if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. Ultimately, I would really investigate the school and location. (some or better than others) But bottom line is just that all MCI really cares about and ( this is my opinion) is getting you to owe them $30,000. Please do your reasearch before signing on the dotted line.

jdcd- i'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I am about to have to re-register for my third time. (the first was due to a hospital stay, the second was due to failing Micro by 6/10 of a point, and this time, I ran over my alotted absences because my daughter was admitted to the hospital.) I don't know who you were dealing with, but the admin folks went out of their way each time I had to re register. I am a little bummed that their attendande policy is so strict, but they tell you that up front. I am having an awesome time, and the instructors are great! Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Good luck to you at your new school.

i am in A&P I at MCI and I currently have a B. My teacher is an actual Dr. and she is wonderful. She teaches our A&P I&II and Micro. the RN class that graduates this year has only lost two students thus far and they are in clinicals. The program is only 3 years old, so you were likely in one of the first classes for the RN program when you went there in 05/06. MCI is a wonderful school with a wonderful program, but it just takes a lot of work on the students part as it is very accelerated. You are not able to transfer in A&P or Micro from any school to MCI, but they will accept Gen Eds. I transferred in Eng I & II, Sociology and Psychology. They have already been posted to my account. I am pretty sure that if a person does their research, they will hear many more success stories than negatives; at least I did. And your credits from MCI's program does transfer to other schools. i have already confirmed this with NSU and ODU....

Hey emtn2b, I just started attending MCI in January at the Midlothian campus. I love the program, but it does go fast. And like others said, if you need help get it ASAP.

Thanks everyone for sharing your insight with me. Currently, I will be starting the LPN program only because in my area there aren't alot of evening programs that offer the RN program. I know it might sounds like a waste of time and money but I just can't leave my day job to go to school. If I do so......I will not have a roof over my head. So I'm planning to to the LPN program and then then do the weekend LPN-RN program which will take another year. I can go to school during the weekend but not during the day.

I've heard alot of good things about MCI and only a few negative things. Can someone share with me their study habits that resulted in receiving passing grades? Did you make notes cards/flash cards or form a study group? Help

Thanks,

T

emtn2b- The study habit thing varies from person to person. I don't know how the LPN program works, but the RN one has a class the first mod called 'Core' that is sort of an introduction into nursing school and different fields you can practice in. They showed us a lot of different techniques there. See if you can get a copy of Mosby's Tour Guide to Nursing School - it has a lot of great study ideas in it, as well as useful info on coping with stress, how to stay organized, career paths, etc.

As far as what worked for me, personally, 1- review and rewrite your notes as soon after lecture as possible, and note anything you are confused on. 2- in my A&P classes, I re-drew pictures of all the systems, and traced their function from start to finish. When it was time to test, it was immensely helpful to know what happens when. 3- get someone, either a study partner, spouse or a whole goup to verbally quiz you and talk you through stuff. Its amazing how much you retain just by discussing it, as opposed to just listening to lecture.

Hope this helps!! Good luck to you!

Delvenia!!!! I am back at school with 49 days to go. Look me up sister!

I am glad you came to join us and I am glad you are enjoying Dr.N
