I am an LPN on an acute psychiatric unit. My nurse manager has given me and my fellow LPNs the task of coming up with ideas for educational/informational sessions with our patients. I was hoping maybe there was someone out there who has some ideas or perhaps links to sites with ideas. I am working with adult patients and most of the sites I have found are geared more towards adolescents and children.
Any ideas are welcome. I just need a starting place.
Thanks in advance!

There's a story I recall that the character Gomer Pyle told. Basically, the story was about finding a lost chicken. It ended with the chicken being found in the chicken coop.
In other words, the subject of your search is in your own head.
Having basically worked the first 2 1/2 years of my Nursing career as an LPN in an Adult Psych Unit, I have an idea of your job responsibilities. In my instance, I passed meds, headed groups, and rode herd on the patients. Since we learn through repetition and association, that which we do most often, we know the best: Medications.
Basic information is a good starting point: Name, classification, dosage, admin. times, interactions, effects and possible untoward effects. From there we could discuss the nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic), neurotransmitters, and receptor sites. We could discuss how Selective Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors or Dopamine Antagonist Agents work.
The list could go on and on. And you already pocess a general understanding of all these factors. It could be a win/win situation, in that you would be expanding your knowledge and passing on what you know to those directly affected by what you do in your chosen profession.
There's alaways going to be questions that outweigh your knowledge. When that happened to me, my comeback was, "I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm gonna find out. Then we'll both know."
This reply is merely intended to get you thinking. If you want to discuss other ideas, please feel free to reply or send me a PM.
Good luck to you, nina539.
