Hey all you expeirienced people out there! Just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get a job or where to look in a small town for healthcare jobs while in school. I am originally from a large city and I am having a hard time finding a job during nursing school, I applied everywhere that I could think of excluding nursing homes, any advice anyone? Please!!!!

Oh boy, small towns can be hard...I live in one. The closest city is 45 min away and that's where I had to go to find a healthcare job that wasn't in a nursing home. If you have CNA or EMT cert that certainly helps and I found that just having any sort of healthcare-related experience or education was helpful too. When I got into the healthcare field I had only just finished an EMT course but had no clinical experience and so had to draw on my previous several years of office experience to land a job as a unit secretary on a med/surg unit. True it was primarily a desk job, however it was a way I could use my non-healthcare skills to get my foot in the door to gain the healthcare experience I needed in a busy city hospital. It has actually turned out to be a great experience and I have learned so much that I would have never learned if I just got a job as a CNA.
I hope that might give you something to go on. I guess to sum it up...look at "non-healthcare" skills you have and see if you can get your foot in the door to get to a patient care position. The other thing is you might have to do some commuting (if you're not too far from a bigger town) to get the job that you want. Best of luck to you :)
