looking for advice

While you go to nursing school, you will be exposed to many different areas during your clinicals. In some schools it might be possible for you to do another rotation in your last semester in an area or two that you have interest.

My best suggestion would be to check with the nursing schools you are interested,they will give you a better idea of their program.

Welcome to allnurses! Like you, I am looking at L&D, Postpartum and possibly NICU...there are many different areas.

First let me say I like your sons name. That is my sons middle name. He was named after his grandfather on his dad's side. Okay. Nursing clinicals will give you lots of variety as you progress on different floors. Sometimes, you may find a place you like to work and you can stay there but for OB/peds your time there will probably be limited because you will get med surg/probably ICU/ER, maybe burn (I loved that), oncology (loved that too). WE got some long term care during the first semester. I liked oncology so instead of transfering to another floor I chose to stay on that floor the entire semester. I ended up with a job offer 6 weeks before I finished school.

Good luck. My advice would be to try out med surg nursing for at least a year before you decide on a specialty. These days you certainly don't have to do that, but it always helps enhance your skills and experience....
