Long Term Care Policies and Procedures

Published

I am an ADON at a long term care facility in Oklahoma. I am wanting to know if there is a web site for long term care that will let me ask or search for policies and procedures. Such as approved catheter dx, specific protocols for pain assessments, fall assessments ect. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have googled and cannot find anything I am looking for.

If you're looking for specific assessment tools try Briggs' forms. They have almost every form you would ever need in long term care.

Check your state regs and the CMS guidelines for appropriate uses for indwelling catheters. There really aren't very many appropriate uses so make sure you document why the person needs a catheter.

Falls--I know Briggs makes a falls risk assessment form. The form isn't the important thing, though, it's what you do with the information once you've done the assessment.

Pain--we assess pain on every resident once a shift at least. If they receive a PRN pain med, they are re-assessed 30 - 60 minutes after receiving the med to make sure it worked.

One more piece of advice about policies----make sure you can really do what you say you're doing. Use evidenced based policies and make sure your staff know where they can find the policies.

Thank You! That helps
