I have posted a few different places here on the forum, maybe this is the right area:
I am a retired RN, I went to school at San Jacinto. Now I am trying to help my daughter age 28 and my nephew, age 21, get into LVN school with the idea of getting a job and then transitioning to RN. I am trying to help them work through the details. Here are some questions...
1) Do they get their Hep. B series via their own private physicians prior to doing anything? and how long does the hep B series last. I had the series of shots years ago but things may have changed since then.
2) My daughter graduated from high school 10 years ago. Does she simply need to show the nursing school that she is a graduate or does her GPA play a part in being accepted this length of time after high school graduation. She is a woman now, not a silly child.
3) What prerequisits are required, I'm trying to pull up the LSsite now, but if you could talk about them, I would appreciate.
4) What about this HESI exam and the Emotional Intelligence Exam, what the heck is that? I don't recall anything about that.
5) My daughter has worked non stopped since high school in the service industry, waitress and now a bartender for years, very good people skills and I would assume math. I would think that would help. Does it?
6) My nephew is highly intelligent but has a speech disorder. How will that affect him?
7) I assume they both should take any prerequitis this fall. Is it too late to get finacial aid? Or should they try to get finacial aid for next spring and take prerequisits then. Money is a huge issue.
Thank you for any help. I went to school in the 80s and 90s for RN and things were not even online then so it is all different.
Basically talk to me like I am stupid
ok, I found this...duh...it answers a few of my questions...

For future reference, depending on health policy you may be able to get HBV free or your copy through your prescription drug coverage at Randall's, they are the only pharmacy in the area that offers all required vaccinations for adults.
The vaccination, physical and titers are also covered through your health insurance plan, to insure it is at no cost get tiers and Tb test with the physical.

Hep b series takes 6 months. The college will make her/him take a placement test to make sure they are at college level math and English. If not, they will need to take remedial courses. I think the LVN program requires an into to anatomy class and English 1301 but if they are planning on bridging to RN, I'd suggest looking at all the pre reqs for RN and take those first. It really helps with success in the LVN program anyway. You should have them go talk to an advisor at the college. Getting started is the hardest part! Good luck!
