Loans and Nurse Residency Program

Hello All, 

I was wondering if anyone could provide some advice. I am beginning to look for my first nursing job and am considering all options - including a nurse residency program.

My worry is the very low pay in the residency would make it impossible to sustain myself when factoring in student loans.

Are loans (federal and private) deferrable while in the residency?
