loan forgiveness

I graduated last July with a Masters in Nursing Education and now work at a local Mississippi Community College as an ADN instructor. I would love to get some assist paying off these debts if I can. I know there is money out there I just do not know where to go. peg

Have you looked into working at a hospital in a underdeveloped or under priviledged area to repay your loans? I have seen a lot of different information online about the government providing money for nurses willing to work in underpriviledged areas. I don't know if it can repay money but you never know. Maybe you could looked into some of the hospitals near you for more informaiton.

I work full time as an ADN nursing instructor in a local community college. I also work PRN at an acute care hospital but neither repays student loans (the hospital does but only for full time employees that are signed up ahead of time). There is rumor about all the loan forgiveness because of the low pay given to college faculty but I haven't found any such forgiveness. Oh well, this is what I wanted to do so "job satisfaction" will have to outweigh the bills. peg

I was under the impression that loan forgiveness programs that were administered by the feds or state mostly dealt with forgiving loans for nurses who took jobs in under served areas. Some hospitals might pay a portion of your student loans back after a certain amount of years worked, but I haven't heard of any hospitals doing that around here.

For those interested in loan forgiveness program:

I took part in the National Health Service Corp Program. Do a google search.

When you get it search nursing loan forgiveness, it will tell you ALL of what you need.

This program was an AWESOME program. I was in it for 3 years and they paid 85% of my nursing loan. You do however claim your awarded amount as non taxed income. Must work in an underserved area and must be hands on nursing care.

here is a direct link also for any healthcare provider, social worker, teacher/educator, officers etc, even for those who have submitted at least 120 payments in student loans the remaining balance can be forgiven if you work in listed areas or do volunteer services for the less fortunate or disabled citizens...a lot of colleagues are not aware of the assistance out there..its all about helping one another....:redbeathe

Check the MS Higher Learning website if you are in MS or check your local state's higher learning website. I know there is loan forgiveness for teachers in MS, and I think there is one for nurses in a poverty/rural area. They also have a stipend for those who are in the nursing instructor program.

I'm working one F/T and 2 PRN jobs just to try and pay my loans . . . not including the one that starts in October and am stressed and exhausted! I will definitely check it out. Thank You!!!!

Does participating in a program like this mean that you will earn less than average as an NP or is the wage pretty competitive and the only thing is you have a workplace commitment? How much are the taxes (range)?As an upcoming RN student (hopefully get in this year) with hopes to become a Geriatric Nurse Practictioner, I am very interested and would love to hear more about your experience. Also, my BSN will be a second bachelor's for me. My first degree is in Gerontology and I have a masters in public administration. Do you think the program would cover these loans too?:clown:
