Living in Manhattan...

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello, knowing life is very expensive in the City, what kind of appartment can you afford as a nurse in Manhattan or the boroughs? My fiancé would like me to join him there, and I was wondering what to expect for a rent. Is it difficult to find an appartment with a washing/dryer? This might be a weird question for you, but it will be first time for me in NYC!

Every advices welcome!

Thanks for reading me,

Dudette

If you and your fiance' will not be living together, Sloan Kettering and New York Hospital have beautiful subsidized apartments for nurses. Working at either of those hospitals is not only an incredible clinical experience but makes it possible to live on the upper east side on a nurses salary!

Oh wow! Thank you for the info. Yes for now we are separated, but he asked me to move to share an appartment with him as we cannot support to be separated anymore, and his level in french doesn't allowed him to look for a job in France for now. But the Memorial is my first choice for when I will look for a job. I have my best friend who is researcher, and she just had an offer to work there. And as she is talking about, this place seems to be the best one for a special experience.

Thank you for sharing the info.

Hello...I have been living in NY for 10 years.. If you really want to live in Manhattan good luck....Apartments are so small that is unreal. On Roosevelt island (great place-btw. Queens and Manhattan-view to die for) they just billed new buildings for hospital staff (not sure which hospital)....so check there...great location and brand new building....Ask what do you need....

Hey, that is an idea! I will start to look there. Do you think it is worth it to go through a real estate agent to find an appartment? It says it is expensive, but I've got the feeling I could find something nicer or larger or less old in a better state!!! What do you think?:wink2:

Hm..not necessarily..apartments in NY are old and small in general, unless you are willing to pay over 3,000 or more for fifth avenue apartments....I think that is good idea (to talk to the agent) just to be on a safe side (you never know who is the landlord, and what are you getting for you money. However, if you use the agent be prepared to pay the fee (sometimes 20%, sometimes 2 months rent....). If you have money to spare go for it...I will post in a couple of hours sites to just look what are they asking for (agencies and landlords)...

Yeah, this is what I heard about prices and what appartments look like. About the agent, I would never have dare to talk to one if I was not going to use it until you tell me. I realize I don't stop to compare things with my own culture. But it seems to work in a totally different way and I should forget all I know from my country and open my mind to arrive with brend new eye there. To expect something is the best way to be deceive. I guess there is something else that the place you live in NYC for so many people to crave to live there:) . Your advices are very helpful for me.:balloons:

Well I totally understand...from Europe my self. I had same approach to things, but luckily never had a bad experience and I hope I will never have one (I am the boss now, I bought my own place). My agent (for buying my own place) is great lady. She is from Europe also....If you are interested I can PM you her phone number and email address. Just explain to her what you want and see what she is going to tell you...That does not cost anything. Talk to me....

Did you buy something in NYC? If your agent could help us to find a great renting appartment, so yes, I'd like to have her email adress. Is she located in NYC too?

yes my boyfried and I bought studio apartment in Queens. This is the thing...we could aford for let's say $270,000 for a studio apartemnt in Manhattan...however, I like to live normal life not to think abou money and not to spend all my salary on mortgage...so we deceide to take studio in Queens for less than $100,000. So now I know that I do not need to wory abount mortgage and I know that if I want to go to skii in Swiss i can do it without calculating....I will send you a private message with her info...and contact her...see what she is going to say....

I live in Jersey City and my commute is under 30 minutes! It's SO much cheaper and you get so much more for your money. Look at the nicer areas of JC...like Newport. Hoboken is more money, but a nice area.

Good Luck!! :)
