i have been a nurse for 6 years now in arizona. i completed the state boards chemical dependency program (aka cando) due to 2 misdemeanor duis for xanax 4 years ago. i am moving to cali in may and i just sent my application to your board of nursing. i did everything as the application asked- certified court paperwork to disclose my incidents and then letters of recommendation and copies of schooling/work reviews with my application.
considering my arizona nursing license has always stayed in good standing due to completing the cando program correctly, and i've given more than enough paperwork with my application explaining my situation and all my rehabilitation...i wonder what the odds are that california would grant me a nursing license?
i'm know cali has their own chemical dependency programs for nurses who went through my situation, but i'm wondering with that history how hard it will be to get the new license? anyone have any experience with this? know anyone who has gone through it?
thanks!

I have been through a similar situation, and you will find many posts from other nurses as well. My RN license was suspended, then reinstated and I requested licensure by endorsement in another state once my suspension was lifted. So, my circumstances were more dire than yours. The best thing I did was to directly contact the Board of Nursing in the state where I was requesting my license by endorsement. That direct contact has been very beneficial to me.
It has taken me four months thus far, and I just received word that I will be receiving my license in the state where I now reside. During this entire process, I was never certain what would happen.
Congratulations to you and I applaud your strength for hanging in there through tough times. Your commitment will serve you well and I hope all will work out well.
One final suggestion is to check the OIG website, also listed as findthedata.com to make sure you were never put on their list of excluded healthcare providers. I only recently discovered that I was put on that list in 2007, so that will be another round of paperwork.
I understand that you are looking for answers more specific to your particular situation, and I apologize I can't directly help you with that. From what you have said, though, I think you have a very good chance of getting your license established in Cali.
Wishing you the best of luck, one day at a time, and serenity throughout it all.
thanks for the reply! so can I ask, what made it take 4 months long?
I sent everything they requested in the app for someone with a criminal history (work reviews, rec letters from sponsor, nurse facilitator, bosses, etc.)
I didn't even know this forum existed until they moved my post here. What useful information!
You're welcome! As far as why it took four months, I can't say for sure. Certainly red tape and a lot of paperwork going back and forth, and then the review of said paperwork. A few mistakes were made by the BON where I applied as they had not requested all the paperwork that they required.
Anyway, there are volumes of posts regarding this on this site. All I can say is that you've been through a lot, and whatever you will need to do to move forward, you can. While it IS up the Cali BON to accept your application and grant you a license, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't. I hope you have a personal contact there with their email and phone #. If not, I'm sure you can get that info as your case will have been assigned to someone.
Again, wishing you all the best! Let me know how it goes :-)
