Liberal Arts Degree Into BSN Program?

Published

Hey, So I'm A 18 year old freshman in college and my school hasn't been really helpful. Last semester I dropped like all my classes and changed my whole minute super last minute (still probably the best decision I've ever made on my own). So Right now I've decided to do nursing and I don't plan on getting my degree in nursing in the community college I am in but rather going to a four year school and getting my bachelor's. A few of my friends have suggested I take all my pre reqs and get my liberal arts degree before going to a four year school instead of just taking the pre reqs I need and transferring. Can you please help as to which would be the best decision for me?? :/

I can't see any benefit to getting a 2 year degree before entering a 4 year program. You'll end up taking (and paying for or using up financial aid on) courses that you don't need for your BSN. I would take any pre-reqs and gen-eds/electives that you can at the 2 year school then transfer over to the 4 year program. That should save you a significant amount of money. Just make sure that you verify that every class you take can actually be used at the school you plan to transfer to.

Why would you get a liberal arts degree before nursing if you know that nursing is what you want? The only advantage I can possibly see is that some college transfer programs give you a few extra points when applying to transfer if you have an AA or AS completed. Look into your local programs that you might transfer to and see if this is the case. It may help to speak to an adviser who works specifically with students planning on transferring to a 4-year university, most community colleges have this service available.

I was in your shoes once, but because of my financial situation and unable to qualify for financial aid, I went to a community college and completed my prerequisites at a community college (much cheaper than any university) and about to start my nursing program there and then transfer to a university and finish my BSN. My advice, if you qualify for financial aid or can pay out of pocket at a university, go ahead and do it from start to end at a university.

Ok Thankss So Much Everone
