Levbid Aka Hyoscyamine For Ibs

Published

I have IBS (Irritable bowel). My doctor prescribed Hyoscyamine for this. I have been on it for 1 week. It is working great for my crampiness and everything else IBS-related. However, my eyes feel very strained lately, to the point where closing my eyes makes it feel worse. This sensation comes and goes, but is VERY annoying to say the least. I could not fall asleep last nite becuz of it. One of the side effects said incr intraocular pressure. Has anyone else had this side effect. I will be calling dr later to see if we can switch med or something! Please let me know if anyone has taken this and experienced this eye issue.

I also have IBS, I can't help you out about the medicine you are on because I've never heard of it, let alone taken it. Any doctor I've gone to acts like there is no medicine that exists that could possibly help me, except for Zelnorm. I've taken that on and off and it seems to work if I keep taking it as I'm supposed to. Have you ever tried it? It's for IBS w/ constipation though. What exactly does the drug that you take do? I'd like to know if there ARE more options out there for me. Some doctors still act like I'm just a mental case for having IBS.... Good luck in resolving your problem.

I also have IBS...it sucks!!!.....I was on Levbid for awhile but the only problem I had with it was dry eyes and mouth....So I switched to Bentyl, it works really well......You should definitely check with your Dr. about the side effects you're having.....Let us know how it goes!!!:D

Actually there are quite a few meds out there you can try!...There's Levbid, Levsinex, Pamine, Zelnorm, Bentyl......and some others that I'm forgetting at the moment.....also so called "bulking laxatives" can be of great benefit, such as metamucil, fibercon, citracel....etc........Along with dietary changes there is alot that you can do to help. :p

Levbid is an anticholinergic med, so it relaxes smooth muscle in the gi tract. However, in turn it does give you dry mouth and slight elevation of HR. I have diarrhea predominant IBS, so i cant take zelnorm. I have tried everything to help myself. From losing weight, to bulk fiber. Bulk fiber does help to an extent, but I continue to have the cramping and sometimes nausea. I know what you mean about drs acting like its all in your head. I started feeling like maybe i was a hypochondriac.

I have had ibs symptoms since i was a teenager, wasnt diagnosed until i was about 21. I started bleeding from my rectum and having pain 9/10 to the point where i was going to pass out. I had to miss days of work. My doctor with Kaiser insurance never ran any other tests to rule out other issues (to rule out other colitis types, parasites, etc). We have a strong hx of colon ca on my dads side, so i was very worried. Dad was in his late 30s early 40s when dx with colon ca. Kaiser cares more about saving money rather than investigating the problem.

Now, I have new health insurance and new dr. This new dr ordered CBC, Hep panel, Hemoccult, BMP, and even inspected my colon. Then he wrote the rx for levbid. I truly notice a dramatic difference. However, that eye issue is bugging me, so i will wait until monday to be sure that it isnt just some fleeting issue. Then i will call my dr. IBS is very common in women!! Thanks for listening. :) It's good to know I'm not a silent sufferer !!

yes..ibs really bites! i was diagnosed a few years ago and yes...they say its all in my head. i started levbid today and i`m hoping it works. the zelnorm was not for me due to the fact that within 15 minutes to an hour i`ve got a severe case of the "quick step" or runs. if anyone has the same problem..i can sure use some info on this problem. thank you!

Levsinex, Bentyl, and Librax are for IBS with Diarrhea. Zelnorm is for IBS with Constipation. Two very different syndromes. Anyhow, I've tried levsinex, librax (and am about to begin bentyl) with no relief of symptoms. The only thing that works for me is practically OD'ing Imodium qd. I am going to begin taking the Bentyl over spring break (I like to use my trusty ol' imodium b/c I cannot miss clinical or work) but have tried it a few times. It drastically increases the pressure in my eyes as the OP described. I did notice that it decreased slightly after taking the Bentyl 3 times. Has that happend for you (OP) yet? Good luck!

PS. I'm going to start a new thread once I get up the guts, but does anyone have any experiece with dating and IBS? I'm recently out of a LONG term relationship (he was fine with the IBS-a fellow nurse no less :p , but now I'm too embarrassed to accept invitations to dinner/movies, etc....Any one else go thru this? :uhoh21:

let me know how the bentyl works for you cuz i spend alot of money on the imodium and tired of being miserable. and as for the dating thing goes, i have a rough time too. i feel very limited when i comes to doing anything or even eating knowing that i have to travel somewhere or being out somewhere when there is no bathroom:imbar my current boyfriend has a hard time understanding that. so i`m really hoping this levbid comes through for me cuz if i don`t find something...i don`t think he`ll stick around cuz he likes to travel and eat:uhoh21: so i`m up for any suggestions too

Its strange how when u are used to living with IBS, you dont realize how much you have had to adjust your life around having it! I forgot to take my Levbid yesterday. Hubby and I were enjoying a nice ice cream at the ice cream shop...i felt my tummy hurting and knew we had to rush home ASAP!! Couldn't even sit and enjoy the sunny day with our icecreams. Ice cream place had no public restroom either! So, had to come home and relax for a long while and then i made sure to take the med today!! I am so bad at taking pills!
