We Have to begin to promote MINIMUM STAFFING STANDARDS, and we have to do it now! Who is willing to make their voice heard, along with mine?
Originally posted by barefootladySometimes the number of patients a nurse is assigned to take care of is not as important as the actual acuity of the patient. WE need safe minimum staffing laws, but we also need something so we can have a extra person added when the acuity is through the roof. I have had days when 4 patients were too much, ICU was full and very high acuity patients were on the floor with inadequate staffing. We need somethings to gage actual bedside care/hours needed when acuity is high vs a set of numbers.
BFL, you need to speak with your facility about this problem.
Acuity studies are something that the staff at various facilities can -and should - promote individually. If the nurses involved would sit down with the powers-that-be and push for routine acuity studies, then this problem could be solved, facility by facility. What a simple solution - and what a giant step forward for nursing! Go for it! And good luck! P
