New grad here...just want to compare my length of orientation on my first job to the average.

Specializes in M/S/Tele, Home Health, Gen ICU.

I received no orientation, however I graduated 17 years ago in the UK from the equivalent of a diploma program. We spent our 3rd year being in charge of the floor with an RN as a resource. I got a job on the last floor I worked on and was in charge on my first working day!

Mine was about 3 months total, into a specialty area (L&D/PP)

I am four weeks into my new grad orientation. I am in ICU and the planned orientation at this point is 12 weeks.

when you are a new grad is not when you want to negotiate your orientation. i knew the unit i was going to and negotiated the training which included a critical care class and internship of 4 months with an assigned preceptor and a trip to every cc unit in the facility. i did get into every area that i might see pt's in and got oriented. the experience was invaluable and yours should be too.

the point is that corporations want new rns badly and will give you everything you want if you only ask!! the key is getting that knowledge a year or so prior to graduation and having a clue as to what field you wish to enter.
