Length of ICU experience

Published

Did any of you nurses get in to CRNA school with less than a year of ICU experience? What were/are the advantages or disadvantages if it ever happens? Thank you.

Regardless of what happens in your interview/acceptance process, don't give up if you don't get in this time around. If you do get accepted and the program starts in the summer-time, that leaves you enough time to study up on CCRN materials and to ask for complex patients in your unit to try and help you increase your skills and knowledge. Best of luck!

I had 16 months critical care experience as an RN when I was accepted into my first anesthesia program in January 2016. At the time, I was working full-time in a 24-bed trauma/surgical ICU at a Level 1 trauma center and part-time as a flight paramedic. I ended up applying to another program a few months later and I had just about 2 years experience then. The program I plan to attend starts in January 2017 but the first 8 months are online DNP courses. Once the anesthesia component starts in August 2017, I'll have three years experience as an ICU/flight nurse. Where you work definitely matters. Good luck!
