Lehman college or Laguardia community college? (I have a bachelor degree)

Published

I have non-nursing bachelor degree outside of the United States.

If I choose Lehman college, I can apply for accelerated 2nd degree program just after I finish taking pre-reqs. But it takes one and half hour to get to the school. Overall, I assume that I could finish the program within two and half years.

If I choose Laguardia community college, I can get RN only, and I have to apply another school for RN-BSN program or accelerated 2nd degree. It might takes more time, but the tuition is almost half at least when I am attending Laguardia community college. Also, it takes only 15 mins from my house, and I can work if I luckily get a job.

My goal is to become a CRNA but my budget is limited.

Which school will be better for me?

Actually I got in Hunter for Art & Science, but my bachelor GPA is only 2.70 with 142 credits.

I also have 24 credits from non-CUNY community college with 3.88 but I won't meet Hunter's requirements, so I am trying to change school.

Thanks for reading.

Hi,

I am also considering Lehman since it has an accelerated BSN, which only accepts 20 students per year! Also, given your undegrad GPA of 2.7, I do not think you are qualified enough for Lehman's ABSN. What is your science GPA?

I heard that Lehman doesn't consider prior GPA and they only consider pre-req GPA. That's why I am trying to go to lehman. I didn't take any prereq so far, so I have to take pre-reqs for a year and half then, I will apply to nursing program. I have a bachelor degree in business and I didn't took any science course.

How nice! I mean, I will also be taking pre-reqs for the next 3 semesters, not counting summer. I actually just completed my first semester of the pre-reqs: chem lecture, and chem lab. I hope to apply next summer for fall 2018 admission! So, did you decide on which school to attend? I actually live in Queens and the commute to the Bronx will be a lengthy one. But at this point I just want to get into the program!

I know this is an older thread but I took most of my prereqs at Laguardia so maybe I can be useful.

I'm currently waiting to hear back from Lehman regarding 2017 fall admission to the accelerated program. You can take your pre-reqs anywhere--so go ahead and take your science classes at Laguardia. Just be aware that as a nondegree student you get last pick, so you have to be very proactive about registering for your classes, and don't discount the accelerated summer/winter classes; often those are easier to register for. I ended up having to take my chemistry sequence at Hunter though because I couldn't get into general chem at Laguardia.

I never investigated the associates RN there, so I have no idea what kind of time commitment it is. But the ABSN at Lehman takes 12 months, which is the fastest program I've seen in NYC. It took me a little over a year to finish my prereqs, including summer sessions and winter. I didn't double up in science (i.e. taking A&P the same time as chem or microbio); you could be done in three semesters that way but it'd be tough.

Just be aware that for the ABSN at Lehman you'll need to aim for a 3.7 cumulative GPA in your science classes.
