Leaving Home for ABSN Program

Published

I live in NYC and am in the process of getting prerequisites done and applying to ABSN programs in the Fall. I'm finding that most of the programs here in the city I am either not a competitive candidate for, are outrageously expensive, or not as good of a program as I would like (low NCLEX pass rates/concerning reviews from students who attended). I've broadened my search for schools outside of where I live, upstate New York, Philadelphia, Miami where I'm willing to relocate for a year. My main concern is whether I will be at a disadvantage finding a job after graduation if I do my clinicals outside of the city I plan to work. I'm not willing to work outside of NYC as my entire life, relationships, affordable apartment etc. are already established here. In your opinion is it better to go to a not so good program where the clinicals may help me get a job in NYC, or go to a better program far away? Do clinicals have much to do with finding a job after school? I've heard people say that it doesn't really matter where you go to school as long as you get through, but I'm skeptical of that. I would really like to get a good education and don't want to pay 60-70k to find myself drowning in a disorganized program with unprepared students graduating. I also do have a lot of nurse and MD friends here in NYC and also have connections at the hospital I work for now. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
