Last semester of Practical Nursing.. is this even fair?

Hello everyone,

I am currently on my last semester of Practical Nursing at Seneca College and I would just like to share my experience.

In our college, the criteria to pass the final semester would be as follows:

10% - Quiz 1

10%- Quiz 2

40%- Comprehensive Exam 1

40%- Comprehensive Exam 2

TO PASS THIS FINAL COURSE, YOU NEED A 75%.

Aside from this, we need to accumulate 375 clinical placement hours.

Now, I am currently halfway in this semester, juggling clinical placement and studying for those tests at the same time. I have passed the first 2 tests so far and just got the result for my Comprehensive Exam. I FAILED MISERABLY - I got a 68%. In this Comprehensive Exam, every content that was discussed and not discussed were testable. So I was definitely juggling my clinical placement and studying for this "CPNRE like" exam. For some reason, most of the people I know failed as well and (we are talking about students who were doing well from the past few semesters), so it seems like something was wrong.

Question is: Is a 75% average to pass this last course fair? Was the breakdown of the course fair?

How did your college structure your last semester of practical nursing school?

Comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I liked the program, but the last consolidation course is very difficult. The material covered is like the review of the previous courses, but the application of the material is difficult. This is especially true for students with English as a second language. The questions on the mid-term are tricky in the wording. Things like"what do you do first" or "how do you assess", are questions to test your critical thinking. I would suggest getting the CPNRE test guides from previous years to study the rationales for the answers. This way, you get the flavour of how they want you to think. Many of my classmates bought NCLEX-PN study guides from different companies. They are helpful in getting the breadth of questions for the exam. I would also study the previous tests in the course as a review. I hope this helps.

Thank you!

Hi,

Do you have any advise for someone who just failed the final comprehensive exam 2? I am currently studying at Seneca and is currently on my last semester. I just finished taking my exam 2 and I think I failed the exam. What would happen? Will I be given an opportunity to retake the exam or I would have to redo the whole PNC520?

Hi, when I graduated, the class after me had a very high failure rate. The people in the class were made to take the entire course. over, including the clinical portion. Most passed the second time. It is only the cost and the time that might be difficult for some. You still need to pass the registration exam which has changed since my graduation. I heard it is more difficult.  Maybe you passed and just feel that you failed. You need to wait before making your next move. Good luck

Hi! If you don't mind me asking, when did you graduate? I spoke to some previous students and some of them said that they failed the exam but ended up passing the course. While the others say that they had to retake the test. I think I failed because after the test, it showed my mark which is kind of odd becuase my other classmates did not see their marks. So I don't know anymore. It's very stressful and I would really not want to retake the whole couse plus clinical because of time and money. Any additional information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I graduated in 2018. I thought it was a pass or fail. I never saw my mark. The process for people failing changes all time. Maybe you only need to re-write the exam. What did your instructors say? They would be the best source for info in this situation.

Hi,

It is still pass or fail but one of the requirements to get a pass in the course is a 75% in the comprehensive exam. So I am not sure if this is it for me as I did not get that 75%. My instructor said that we needed to get 75%. He did not mention anything about retaking the exam. Last semester students have said that some were able to get a rewrite of the exam. But I don't know if it is the same case for this semester. Im so worried as I do not want to have to redo my clinical hours. I have worked hard to finish those hours while sacrificing my job.
