Hello, im currently studying in Toronto and i want to ask if landing a job is really that difficult for a recent grad in RN? I was contemplating on the fact that i might have to move in order for a better prospect of getting a job.
If you dont mind me asking, how long was it before you started working after graduation?
and how long did it take after graduation to work stably at the place you prefer? (my ultimate goal is to work at Princess Margaret Hospital or TGH)
Thank you for reading!

I don't know what it's like now, but I left Toronto in January for AB. I had a permanent position before I wrote the RN exam last year. I didn't want anything through HFO, and the money is better in AB. I don't regret it.
Many of my friends in ON have said that there are a few more casual lines offered this year, but not much has improved in the way of permanent work. Mayor Ford is also very stingy, so I can't see jobs in abundance for Toronto nurses anytime soon.
My advice? Don't be overly picky, otherwise you are probably going to wait for employment.

Don't be picky. Do well in your placements. If you have a consolidating placement @ PMH or TGH then you have a better chance of landing a job there. I just graduated April 2011 in a GTA nursing program. I have not landed a job. It kinda speaks for itself.
Joanna73 is right, don't count on any full time openings soon because Mayor Ford is stingy. However, I do encourage you to apply to HFO as some of my friends who are finishing their HFO positions are landing jobs; albeit, not full time but at least permanent part time after the program. Apply all around ONTARIO, not just within GTA. The GTA is overcrowded with new grads. Just remember that there are at least 4 RN nursing programs WITHIN GTA which are spurting out new grads all at the same time. FYI: 2011 new RNs is the biggest graduating class to ever graduate. Therefore, you'll not only be competing with your fellow graduates but also with those who graduated this year.

Come up to Markham Stouffville - we are expanding, opening 100 new beds in 2013. Lots of jobs! In fact, there are currently 5 RN postings on our web site.
I have applied to Markham Stouffville but that was two months ago. Maybe I should apply again. Thanks.

Mayor Ford and the Toronto city council have nothing to do with most nurse's salaries, the budgets for hospitals and long term care facilities are funded by the provincial government. Only a handful of nurse's salaries are funded by the city of Toronto, for example Toronto's public health nurses.
I apologize. I should stay away from political comments.
Actually, since you are a new nursing grad who is struggling to find work and there is a provincial election on Oct 6th, you should be asking the candidates in your riding what their plans are to create nursing jobs and balance hospital budgets.
Oh trust me, I did. I haven't received a letter, phone call or email back from any of them. =(
I especially expected more from the Liberal Party since they're they ones who are "running" the province right now. It is in their best interest to answer my letter but nope--haven't received a reply and it's been 2++ weeks. As of right now, I don't know who I'm going to vote for.

When I was searching for a job, I found the best way to get any response was to send the resume directly to the department manager or supervisor,,,NOT to HR.
